Auckland Woman GiƲes Biгth in the Back Seat of a Car
Axel Murray, who is currently just two days old, couldn’t wait to enter the world. The baby boy was born on Saturday morning, in a rush, two weeks before his due date and minutes before his mother could reach the hospital.
Roxanne Faithfull and her partner Andrew Murray hurried from their central Auckland apartment to the hospital as quickly as possible in the early hours of Saturday. Roxanne’s water broke at 4 am, and the couple timed the contractions.
Andrew said, “He was two weeks early. We hadn’t packed the car or prepared anything yet, still in awe of his mother. It was Rox’s second child, but her first was 13 years ago.” Roxanne’s first baby was born after 22 hours of labor, so the couple was expecting a similar experience this time. However, baby Axel had other plans. It was a short trip to Auckland Hospital, but baby Axel decided to be born in the back seat of the car, with Roxanne delivering him.
Andrew recalled, “With all these modern gadgets that moms have these days, I was packing everything she needed, trying to figure out how to fit the baby seat to the back seat of the car. She was fine, and then suddenly, she was ready. I didn’t have a midwife or any healthcare professional nearby, but we didn’t feel alone. We live on the top floor right in the CBD on Albert St. It was a long corridor past all the other apartments and then an open lift, so it felt like the whole complex was with us.”
They almost made it to Auckland Hospital in time, but with the nervous dad driving as fast as he could, Roxanne continued to labor in the back seat. He said, “We almost got there. I drove into the parking gate as I went past the ticket booth. She was screaming, ‘it’s coming.’ It was a very fast drive. The head was already showing. Then we reached the front entrance, and she was holding him in her arms.”
While holding her child in the back seat of the car, the mother cried tears of joy. Both the mother and the baby are doing well. Roxanne and Axel were transferred to BT, but since her body was still in turmoil, she had to return to the hospital on Saturday night. She returned to BT on Sunday. Axel’s proud parents are excited to bring him home. Although his father is overjoyed, he claims that the back seat will never be quite the same.
